Getting out of the Ego in one easy step
Ekart Tolle, in his last book "A New Earth", talks very well
about the ego. He explains that it is the cause of our unhappiness.
Yesterday, as I was reading a few pages of his book, I realized that
his advice for experiencing life outside of the ego was simple but not
very effective. I didn't feel much of a sense of peace following his
advice--just observe your thoughts.
This is well and good, of course. But I want to share with you a
very simple exercise that will give you the experience of being
in pure awareness, outside of your ego for a longer time,
while creating almost immediately the sense of peace that comes
with it.
This exercise is one of the numerous exercises in the Avatar course
that brings people out of the ego easily. It is actually explained
in one of the mini courses --that you can download for free--
on their website:
http://www.avatarepc.com .
Before I introduce the exercise, let me talk a little bit more about the
ego and the mind:
As you know our ego gets in the way of living in the present
moment and therefore prevents us from feeling at peace in our daily lives.
The ego has many tricks. Here are a few:
1- The ego keeps the illusion that we ARE our mind.
We think we ARE our thoughts, so we believe what we think and
take our thoughts seriously, reacting to them with emotions and
actions. So we are swept along, and don't feel we have any control
over what we experience.
2- Our mind is constantly creating an illusion of separation by
"labeling" things either good, bad, or even just as it is.
When you name something just as it is: eg. This is a car, computer, etc...
it automatically separates you from them. Have you ever noticed that?...
Look around and name something; you will feel a sense of separation
suddenly between you and the thing.
Well, this is the effect our thougths/mind have on us. The ego loves to
keep the illusion of separation going, so it can keep creating comparisons,
judgments, and make you feel superior, inferior, or different!
So, when we want to live outside of the ego, we will need to quiet the
mind and experience life without labeling, thinking.
This following exercise will give you an actual experience of living
outside of your ego/mind and bringing you back to a sense of peace
in any circumstances.
I use it as a meditation when I walk my dog...and automatically
get into a deep sense of peace that sets the tone for my day.
As I explained, we need to get out of the labeling business to
experience life outside of the ego. This is where this exercise comes in
handy.
It is called : Count the Forms.
Beware, the ego is going to fight this exercise: you might have thoughts
like "it is too simple", "it is not fun", "there is nothing to it" bla, bla,
bla...
Just observe and keep going...
So what you are going to do is to pick something, like a chair or a
glass for example...but oops, I have already labeled the thing...
so once you have picked something, observe its shape, its form, its
3 dimensions, get a SENSE of its shape. Feel the shape.
At that moment, when you are not putting any label on it, but
just sensing its pure, 3 dimensional shape, you are out of your ego!!!
Then simply count it: "One"...and keep picking a shape and sensing
it, and counting it...."two"....
You are now sensing instead of thinking. And if you keep going from
object to object, you should very soon get a sense of peace, your
mind will quiet down, and you'll be purely in the present moment...
No thoughts in your mind... about consequences, future things, past
events...nothing. Just being present!!!
You can go in and out of your ego at will during the day. When you feel
swept along, when your mind is driving you crazy, take a minute or two
and reconnect with all that is and the peaceful feeling that is always
present
around you, no matter where you are and what is happening.
Enjoy!!!
